Rigo and I took a quick school night trip to The University of Michigan to hear Ms. Cisneros read from Caramelo as well as selected poetry. We were invited by former students at UM: Jose Luis Martinez, Efrain Martinez and Ismael Martinez and also met with several of their friends. Ms. Cisneros is the celebrated author of House on Mango Street and Woman Hollering Creek, as well as multiple volumes of poetry. What an unforgettable evening!

Should you not have inferred, I am an unreconstructed wholly addicted reader with no intentions of breaking that habit. I have been reading voraciously since my first major chapter book in the second grade Black Beauty and have been known to enjoy math and science, although social studies interests me a great deal. A former Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo, West Africa, my first second language was French, although I am now more fluent in Spanish. I have worked for the Van Buren Intermediate School District since January 1981 and was actually assigned to Covert Public Schools to work with one family from Michoacan, Mexico. It has been exciting to watch Covert become filled with families with roots from Mexico and was a grace and delight to travel to Michoacan in 2008 where I visited relatives of Covert families, many of whom hosted me in their homes. Meeting the whole family is a privilege of the work I do and I am proud of the friendships that I hold in this community. My education at The University of Michgan (AB English, AM Education), but more so teaching in the Peace Corps and in Santo Domingo, La Republica Dominicana prepared me well for working with migrant, immigrant and bilingual students and their families.
